Well, I suppose the cat is out of the bag. Or, more accurately, the cat never really got in the bag in the first place. I’ve probably talked to each of the people who would normally read this page already but for those of you who are viewing my life from afar, I called to ask Lauren’s father’s permission to marry her. I guess traditionally I’m not supposed to say anything and that the entire ramp-up to actually proposing is supposed to be kept a secret. Well, that just wasn’t feasible in this case so it was let slip that I made the phone call. I haven’t proposed yet, although I plan to do that soon, but I’ve made the first step by asking her father for his blessing. And when I say “soon” its a relative term since I first have to save for a ring. I guess I did things a bit backwards and asked permission before I actually had the ring in my hand but I just wanted everyone on the same page, myself included. I’m usually pretty clueless when it comes to formal things if you couldn’t tell already. So, there you have it, I’m almost engaged. I suppose you can take that as a pre-announcement if you wish, or you can just hang out and wait a little while for the real one.
So, that’s whats been on my mind (and my stress level) for the past few days now. Besides that I have to shoot at least 4 different and interesting photo shoots this weekend. One of myself (aka: a self portrait). Then print all of them. Wheee! I need to have the self portrait and a work-in-progress shoot for Portrait class a week from today, next wednesday, and 2 more work-in-progress shoots for personal vision by next thursday. This weekend is going to be busy.
Besides all the business there’s not much going on. I’m starting to look forward to spring break. Chip might come down and hang out and traditionally Nagle comes over and hangs out for most of the week. It should be fun.
I should also be thinking about my job search. I’ve already started looking at places to send my resume and portfolio and if these next few shoots turn out well, I’ll have all I need to complete my portfolio and start sending it off. It’s an exciting time. A very stressful time as well.
I’m also mid-redesign of this half of the site so that it can be more appealing to prospective job opportunities. People who aren’t going to look at the Photo side of the site but instead are interesting in an interesting design. I’m also thinking about taking a shot at some charity work and helping one of Jason’s friends with their site. Maybe I’d just pass an empty page template on to them. We’ll see. I’m also thinking about putting up flyers around campus and offering Photoshop and web design services. I’d be interested to see how receptive the other students would be to something like that.
That is all. Matt out.

You know what I tried to do this morning? Find pictures of all you silly peoples. You know what I found? Nothing. I have a picture of Lauren, a picture of Nagle and that’s it. Well, I did find one of Chris and one of Chip but I doubt they’d be flatering to use. So, here’s the deal. Look through your computers, look through your desks, photo-albums, whatever, and find me a nice picture of yourself. The alternative is to have me take news ones the next time I see each of you, and we all know how much you all love sitting in front of the camera. Ok? Is it a deal?

UPS was nice enough to drop off my memory stick yesterday but I wasn’t able to get it because they left it in the apartment complex rental office. I got it this morning and you would have thought I got a NEW Clie. I’ve been playing MP3s and copying pictures and adding pictures to my address book, it’s fun. I like memory sticks. Especially the 128M variety.
As for the rest of the day, it’s going to be pretty borring, unless I go out shooting, which won’t happen I can already tell. My basic plan is to sit myself down, as far from a video game as possible, and plan (actually decide on things) my next photo shoot. I need to decide where, when and what. Three questions I have no clue how to answer.
And speaking of photo shoots, I thought you guys might like to see a few of the pictures I shot the other day. Now, these aren’t the “good” ones, these are just my digital “test shots” before I actually shot the film. I’ll scan the film later and put those up on the other photo half of LI.net in my portfolio section, but for now you can take a look at these. Remember, these are only previews. Feedback is most welcome and appreciated.

Well, it’s been a few days since I’ve updated anything. I figured it was about time. A little bit of everything has been going on around here, most all of it good. Wednesday I had a critique in Personal Vision that went rather well. I even had one of my pictures likened to a Cindy Sherman piece. I was pretty psyched about that. I had basically just used my shoot as a warm up since I was waiting for my ring flash to show up. I was surprised about how well some of the shots came out and now I’m excited for the rest of the semester. Speaking of the ring light, it came on Wednesday and the modular that makes it work came yesterday, which means that I can play around with it this weekend and get the hang of it as I ease myself back into some serious shooting.
Also, speaking of deliveries. My memory stick and copy of Roman Holiday are on their way from Amazon and my Clie case and screen protectors are on their way from PalmGear (expansys.com). I couldn’t find any cases I liked on Amazon so I went to PG for that but I still has an Amazon gift certificate so I figured I’d get the memory stick from them. Of course it just didn’t make any sense to pay for shipping on a memory stick so I just simply had to get a DVD to make the shipping worthwhile.
So, all that should be here this weekend. I hope.
Besides that I’ve been trying to clean the house up a little. It’s not that it’s messy, it just looks like 2 college guys live here. Not like that’s a bad thing, but my obsessive compulsive side kicks in every once in a while and needs to straiten things out. It’s also starting to bother me that I don’t have a coffee table. I don’t have any place to put my feet while watching TV. Not that I watch TV all that much (less than 4 hours a week), mostly because I only have basic cable, but when I do I’d like a nice place for my feet to rest. Oh well.
Elsewhere, I’ve decided that I’ve gotten annoyed with my own music collection. Now, most of my friends would say that I have a pretty good collection going at this point and while I would agree I would point out that everything I’m listening to on a regular basis is at least a few years old. For example, yesterday in the car I was listening to the second Weezer album, a 5 year old Catch-22 album, and Cafe Del Mar Vol. 5 (they’re up to Vol. 9). There’s absolutely nothing wrong with any of those albums but I’ve listened to them so many times I know them inside and out. I suppose I’ll get a treat in a month or so when Paul Van Dyks new artist album comes out and I was also thinking about picking up Underworld’s A Hundred Days Off, Tom Middleton’s Sounds of the Cosmos and Ministry of Sound’s The Chillout Sessions. I’ve also wanted Underworld’s live album (everything, everything) since I heard it in Chris’ car while I was home but it’s out of print and I can’t bring myself to spend $40 for the import.
That brings us up to the present, Friday, a SCAD bullshit make-up day. My Portrait teacher has decided to be evil and scheduled a lighting demo day today so that everyone has to come. Usually teachers are understanding about Friday make-up days and realize that some students have jobs and have to work on the weekends. Not this time. He’s scheduled one of the most important days class-wise, on a day that he knew only half the class was going to show up for. Arg.
Oh well, I need to get up anyways. This will give me a chance to ask fellow students what they’re doing this weekend and to see if I can recruit anyone to pose for some pictures. We’ll see.
Alright. Time to get ready for the day. Matt out.

Well, it was a fun weekend. Ultimate frisbee was just what I needed on Sunday. Afterward I convinced Nagle to go out to dinner with me and Lauren. It was nice, we should definitely plan on doing that again. Nagle’s been saying that he’s been bowling a lot lately so maybe we can work that into it.
Monday (yesterday) we had the day off for Martin Luther Kings birthday. It’s taken as quite the serious thing down here so there was no mail and no school. That in itself was nice since that meant I had a 4 day weekend. So, instead of working or doing anything remotely constructive, we borrowed Nagle’s copy of the Godfather trilogy and watched that. Actually we only watched the first two. Six hours of the mafia were quite enough for us for one day.
Having not worked this weekend, that kind of puts me in a tough spot for Thursday. I have a “work in progress” critique and to be quite honest theres no work in progress. I’ve been waiting on my film and flashes. Some of it came yesterday via FedEx so I’m shooting tonight. Hopefully I can get and interesting combination of natural light, street light and camera mounted flash. I really wanted some “magic light” pictures but the sun is already going down so I don’t think that’ll happen. Oh, magic light, for those of you who don’t know, is the period of time between late-afternoon and dusk OR between sunrise and morning. It’s those 1 hour periods of time, at the moment somewhere around 4pm and 6am, that have that perfect golden colored light that makes skin glow with a fantastic luminosity.
Sorry, got all artsy on you for a moment there. Anyway, that’s what I’m doing tonight. I’ll be pulling Lauren, Brittney and Jason outside at various times of night to try and get a few rolls of film shot. I’ll also ask Jason if I can use his digital camera. These are only “working ideas” that are being critiqued so digital is perfectly acceptable. Tomorrow I’ll turn in the film for developing around 8am, come back, sleep a little more, go pick up the film and head down to Burgen to make contact prints. From there I should be good to go. I’ve also got to plan a bigger shoot for this weekend. I’m thinking a travel strobe pack and the beach. It should be fun… if I can pull it together.
That’s all from this end. Later.

Nagle told me not to hack anything so that’s what I’m not doing. Actually, I’m sitting in the O-house RA office waiting for that tubby bitch. He’d better hurry cause I’m getting bored. Just kidding Nagle 🙂
